A BAD PROJECT MANAGER DOESN'T LISTEN TO OTHER PEOPLE
When you became a project manager you might begin to think that you know it all. You are the person in your team who has successfully completely PRINCE2 training and who has the authority to run the pieces of work.However, it is still worth bearing in mind that other people could have opinions that are worth hearing. You don’t know what opportunities or ideas you are missing out on if you don’t listen to others.Even if you don’t gain anything new from listening to other people, it is still the polite thing to do. During workshops and team meetings you should be sure that you give others the chance to get involved and give you their opinions if they have any.
NOT GIVING OUT WORK FAIRLY
A bad project manager probably keeps all of the good, interesting work for themselves and gives the worst tasks to the rest of the team. Is that the way you would like to work? It surely isn’t.It is important that everyone in your team respects you for the fair way in which you treat them. This means that you need to pay close attention to the different types of work that each person is given.This is something that is important in their personal development, as well as in making their days more interesting. The more variety you can give them then the better this will make their prospects of progressing in their careers.
NOT BEING FAIR TO STAFF
Being fair to your staff isn’t just about the way that you divide out the work, though. It is something that can also be seen in many of the different ways that you interact with them too.For example, if you can allow them some flexibility in their working hours or in occasionally working from home then this is a great thing to do. While project work is often intense, there are usually quiet periods in which it is possible to relax a little.Being fair to staff also means taking advantage of these quieter spells to get them trained up on new skills. You might be heading off on a PRINCE2 training course in Bristol but what course will they go on? Only a bad project manager fails to think of the development opportunities for their team.
GETTING ANGRY AT THE WRONG PEOPLE
There are certain to be times on your projects when you get angry or upset. It might be that difficult stakeholders are driving you to distraction or that your bosses are making life more difficult that it has to be.However, one potential issue to avoid is that of taking out your anger and frustration on the wrong people. For a start, your project team members aren’t likely to be blame for any problems that have cropped up.A good project manager will understand where the problems are coming from and how to deal with them. A bad project manager may just lash out at the closest or easiest target.
